Baths, Budapest, Hungary -

This has to be the most well know of the baths and certainly the biggest in Budapest but only ranks seventh in my list. Situated close to Heroes Square and the city park, there are outdoor and indoor pools. It’s easy to start outside in one of the large thermal pools before heading downstairs to the sauna or upstairs to the indoor pools, where you can hop from pool to pool until you finally reach the outside again. There are separate changing locker areas for men and women as well as cabins that for hire and a cafe serving cooked...

The Hévíz Thermal Lake is a natural thermal lake to the West of Budapest and is sixth on my list. Surrounded by wellness hotels, I feel like I am stepping back in time to the 19th Century age of countryside visits for rest, recouperation and strolling through parks with parasols and straw hats. The lake complex has buildings over the lake itself, with the hottest spring inside the central hall. There are 4 pools in the hall, so try each one out until you find a temperature to your liking. Outside are sun terraces and access for swimming in the...

Number five on my list is a ’must see’. Built during the Turkis occupation, Rudas has a fantastic 16th Century domed room housing a large Turkish octagonal thermal bath. Branching off from this are cold water bucket showers, steam rooms and the like. This feels very much like stepping back into the a scene from Budapest’s past occupation by the Turks. One of the passages leading away from this magnificent bath leads to a series of connecting rooms with more baths. Finally, head up the staircase at the end of the building to find the cafeteria and higher still to...

Situated by the Freedom Bridge on the Buda side of the Danube, this is a magnificent building with many interesting architectural and artistic features and is fourth on my list. The main outside pool has high walls on all sides and is relaxing on a hot Summer’s day. The inside thermal waters are very relaxing and the main pool with its gargoyles and fountains is ideal for swimming. The terrace restaurant has a great selection of food and there are sunbathing areas everywhere, as well as single sex naturist roof terraces for an additional fee. Choose these baths for their...

My third choice of baths is Palatinus is on Margaret Island in Budapest and is on a main bus route for the footweary traveller. For the more energetic, coming from the South of the island make sure that you stop at the musically accompanied fountains for a free show and perhaps go for a paddle before the 10 minute walk through the century old park to Palatinus. With some fantastic slides, Palatinus is definitely the most adrenaline filled location on my list. As well as a vertical drop slide, there are gentle ones for the faint hearted. There are also...
